Joel graduated from the University of Alberta with a combined bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Education. He is an American College of Sport Medicine certified trainer, and is a full-time teacher in the Chilliwack School District.

While at the University of Alberta, Joel played 3 seasons with the Golden Bears football team. After his playing career was cut short by a sports injury, he spent his time coaching youth football and basketball in Edmonton. His athletic career and coaching experiences allowed him to develop leadership and mentoring skills, and ultimately led him to pursue teaching and personal training.

Since moving to Chilliwack in August, Joel has taken full advantage of BC’s beautiful outdoors. He enjoys hiking, running, strength training and going for walks along the Vedder river. He is looking forward to mountain biking year round, something he was never able to do during Alberta’s cold winters!

Through his own personal and professional experiences, Joel has learned that health and wellness practices look different for each and every person, and like many individuals, Joel has faced his share of adversity along his health and fitness journey. Joel has suffered three ACL tears during his football career, requiring years of rehabilitation to get back to where he is today. He also has an autoimmune condition called Ankylosing Spondylitis that over time can cause the bones of the spine to fuse together. This condition has led to his dedication and commitment to live and promote lifelong physical activity and healthy eating.

He is very excited to have landed at Ascend Fitness where he has the opportunity to help individuals achieve their goals.
