What are You Afraid Of?

Are there things in your life that you want, but you’re not doing the work to get them?

Maybe you want a healthier relationship with food. Maybe you want to lose 50 pounds.

Sometimes the easiest way forward is not to do more, but to break through the barriers getting in the way.

There are many things that could be getting in the way, but one thing that comes up a lot is fear.

What are you afraid of?

That’s not a rhetorical question.

You might start with “I don’t know”. Allow yourself to be wrong. Take out a journal or note pad, set a timer for 10 minutes and write without trying to edit your thoughts.

While it’s not required to create change, discovering WHY you might do well for a while, then fall back into old patterns, can be helpful.

Of course, there are other reasons for inconsistency besides some deep-rooted fear. It could be that you have always followed BS diets that made you give up the foods you love, or you never learned HOW to build simple habits that work.

And often, there’s an underlying belief system that keeps you stuck.

What am I afraid of?

For example, if you look at thin women and think of them as shallow and self-centered, you’ll do what it takes to never lose the weight.

Maybe you’re afraid that you won’t be able to handle life’s challenges without chocolate and chips.

Maybe you’re afraid that you won’t be able to say no to unwanted attention.

Maybe you’re afraid that if you actually try, and don’t succeed, you won’t be able to handle the feeling of failure, so it’s safer not to try at all.

Maybe you’ve been using your weight struggle as an excuse not to do other things in your life.

Maybe you’re afraid of what would happen if you lose the weight and still are not happy.

Maybe you’re afraid that if you lose the weight you’ll become weight and food obsessed.

I don’t know what it is for you but have the courage to ask yourself the question and answer it honestly. If you have struggled with your weight for a big part of your life, there’s a good chance that there is an underlying fear.

Once you bring awareness to it, you can start to challenge these fears and beliefs, and start to practice new thoughts and new beliefs.

Will you do this exercise?
